ASUSTOR launches second-gen AS67 series NAS with great specs

ASUSTOR’s latest NAS range includes three Intel-powered enclosures.

ASUSTOR launched the second generation of NAS enclosures making up a new ASUSTOR AS67 series. Replacing the AS66 range of Intel-powered NAS, the new range makes full use of the latest Intel Celeron processors, unlocking M.2 slots, 2.5Gb networking, and HDMI ports. If you’ve been waiting for some more powerful mid-range NAS from ASUSTOR, the wait is finally over.

I’ve always been a big fan of ASUSTOR’s catalog of best NAS, putting them right up there with the very best from Synology. The latest three enclosures, consisting of the Lockerstor 2 Gen2 AS6702T, Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T, and Lockerstor 6 Gen2 AS6706T bring the very best from the NAS maker and Intel.

The three NAS enclosures come packing two, four, and six bays, respectively. The new 10nm quad-core Intel Celeron N5105 system-on-a-chip (SoC) offers boost speeds of up to 2.9GHz, a reported 31% performance gain over previously used processors. For RAM, we’re looking at up to 8GB of DDR4-2933, though the CPU can officially support much more.

Not two, but four M.2 slots are present across the entire Gen2 range, offering the ability for NVMe SSDs to be used as storage and/or caching. Traditionally, we’ve seen NAS enclosure support one or the other and it’s great to see ASUSTOR go down this route. If all that wasn’t enough, there’s a PCIe 3.0 slot that can be used for yet another SSD or a 10Gb LAN card.

ASUSTOR also gave the I/O a refresh, throwing in two USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 ports with speeds of 10Gbps each. Two 2.5Gb LAN ports are present that can offer even more network bandwidth for busy homes and offices. In order to keep all this tech adequately cooled, ASUSTOR redesigned the chassis slightly to include a new vent on the top panel for cool air to be drawn in.

Thankfully, ASUSTOR chose not to ditch the HDMI 2.0b port, making the new Lockerstor Gen2 range ideal for running Plex Media Server and is certainly something I look for in the best NAS for Plex. All three NAS will launch with full support for the latest ADM 4.1 operating system.

Prices for the two-bay Lockerstor 2 Gen2, four-bay Lockerstor 4 Gen 2, and six-bay Lockerstor 6 Gen2 are $460, $610, and $810, respectively.
