Synology DiskStation DS1522+

Best RAM for Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+

The Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ is a powerful NAS enclosure with eight drive bays, an AMD Ryzen processor, and upgradable RAM. In this guide, we’ll be going over what RAM is supported by this NAS, which kits you should buy to expand its capacity, and how to go about installing the modules. Here’s all you need to know about buying the best RAM for Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+.

What RAM is supported by Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+

Inside the Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ is the mighty AMD Ryzen V1780B, a quad-core processor with a maximum boost speed of 3.6GHz. It’s far more capable than most chips found inside NAS enclosures, though there is no integrated GPU like with Intel Celeron processors.

Being a capable AMD Ryzen V1780B, we’ve got full support for up to 32GB of RAM, similar to the Ryzen R1600 inside other Synology enclosures. 8GB of DDR4 RAM is available with the DS1823xs+ as standard, but if you need to run more than a few apps at once with multiple people online, you may need more memory.

Two DIMM slots are available on the NAS and one has the 8GB module preinstalled. This can be easily extracted and replaced with two 16GB DDR4 DIMMs to bring the total up to 32GB. The best NAS allows one to upgrade and expand the RAM so it’s good to see the DS1823xs+ capable here.

While Synology would much prefer you use their own branded modules (and pay the small premium for the luxury), it is possible to use aftermarket modules like this A-Tech DIMM.

Synology offers its official RAM modules for branded NAS enclosures. They’re expensive but you will have peace of mind and full support from the company should an issue arise down the line. This kit would double the available memory of the DS1522+.

This is an unofficially supported RAM module that emulates the Synology D4ES01-16, which means it should be compatible with the DS923+. Install two of these and you’ve got 32GB of unofficial RAM.

This Synology D4ES01 module has 16GB of DDR4, allowing you to install two of them for an official capacity of 32GB to be met with Synology DIMMs. You can make use of full support for the NAS, but it’s really pricey.

v-Color makes some great affordable RAM for PCs and the company also makes some memory modules for servers, including NAS. Not only does this 32GB kit save you money (and lots of it), but some DS1522+ owners have managed to go up to 64GB. We’ve not confirmed the modules work so your mileage may vary.

How to install RAM in Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+

Just like other Synology DiskStation NAS enclosures, installing RAM inside the DS1823xs+ is a straightforward process requiring a Philips screwdriver. Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Shut down the DS1832xs+.
  2. Carefully slip the NAS over on its roof.
  3. Remove the two screws on the RAM slot door.
  4. Remove the 8GB module from the primary DIMM slot (if installing two new modules).
  5. Install the newly purchased RAM module(s).
  6. Reinstall the door.
