Best RAM for Synology DiskStation DS2422+

Give your DS2422+ a small boost.

The Synology DiskStation DS2422+ is a powerful NAS enclosure with an AMD Ryzen processor, 12 local drive bays (with support for up to 24), and an expansion port. The 4GB of preinstalled DDR4 RAM may seem a little underpowered, which is where this guide comes into play.

What RAM is supported by Synology DiskStation DS2422+

The Synology DiskStation DS2422+ is powered by the AMD Ryzen V1500B processor. This CPU is capable of using up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a total of 4GB is preinstalled. Random access memory (RAM) is what’s used by the system to store frequently accessed files, much like a desktop PC or a smartphone.

When the operating system is loaded or loads a file, it’s copied from the slower storage (and yes, even an SSD is slower than RAM) to the system memory where the CPU can access it much quicker. It’s why a file may load quicker the second time you open it. The more RAM you have available, the more can be stored.

When capacity is reached, the system will start to delete older data. The entire RAM storage is cleared when the system shuts down since power is required to store data, which is why we don’t use RAM for long-term storage. Upgrading the RAM speed and capacity is a good way to improve the overall system performance of even the best NAS.

Synology offers its official RAM modules for branded NAS enclosures. They’re expensive but you will have peace of mind and full support from the company should an issue arise down the line. This kit would double the available memory of the DS1522+.

v-Color makes some great affordable RAM for PCs and the company also makes some memory modules for servers, including NAS. Not only does this 32GB kit save you money (and lots of it), but some DS1522+ owners have managed to go up to 64GB. We’ve not confirmed the modules work so your mileage may vary.
