QNAP Launches QuTS-powered TS-hx87XU-RP NAS with Intel Xeon E

Impressive new HDD/SSD hybrid NAS from QNAP.

QNAP announced four new NAS running the company’s QuTS operating system. The new QNAP TS-hx87XU-RP range of NAS comes with up to 30 drive bays in up to a 4U rackmount form factor. Sporting Intel E-2300 series processors, these NAS enclosures are able to be kitted out with 10Gb and multi-2.5Gb connections for rapid data transfer.

All four QNAP TS-hx87XU-RP NAS are designed to take full advantage of both HDD and SSD storage with a combination of 2.5 and 3.5-inch drive bays, depending on the model. These aren’t consumer-grade NAS by any means and are instead designed for businesses with big files, virtualization, VDI, and backup requirements.

Let’s look at the processors and RAM first. These enclosures can be configured with up to an eight-core Intel Xeon E-2378. All four NAS can support up to 128GB of DDR4 RAM with error checking. Then there are the redundant power supplies for each model and that super-fast 10GBASE-T stack.

But if all that wasn’t enough already, QNAP included up to three PCIe Gen 4 slots for adding additional network ports (up to 25Gb), QM2 cards, fiber channel cards, and other expansion cards to expand the functionality of the server. This is when we blur the lines between a typical NAS and a full-fledged server environment.

No word on pricing yet, but suffice to say these puppies won’t be cheap. Other highlights include QNAP’s SSD antiwear leveling technology to help prevent simultaneous SSD failure, as well as countless other features included in the QuTS operating system.

If you’re looking for some great enclosures but don’t need something this extravagant, we’ve rounded up the best NAS you can buy right now.
