The Synology DiskStation DS423+ is a new four-bay NAS that replaces the older DS420+ enclosure but Synology is doing things a little differently compared to the other x23 NAS released thus far this year. We’re going to go through precisely what’s new with the DS423, how it compares to the other 2023 NAS released by Synology, and who should consider buying one.
So, what’s new with the Synology DiskStation DS423+? It’s configured similarly to the outgoing DS920+, one of the best NAS for Plex, but with a few limitations in place to meet the lower MSRP. We’re looking at some of the features we’ve been crying for with the DS923+ and DS723+, including an Intel Celeron processor.
Compared to its predecessor, the Synology DiskStation DS423+ has a slightly better processor, the same amount of DDR4 RAM, the same configuration of drive bays and M.2 slots, as well as ports. Where the DiskStation DS423+ does have an upper hand is the ability for the M.2 SSDs to be used for cashing or storage.

The DiskStation DS420+ was a good option for those looking to build a starter Plex NAS with four bays and the DS423+ could be considered the better value option over the Synology DiskStation DS923+ if you value an Intel CPU and its integrated graphics processing. Interestingly, Synology states the DS423+ has a maximum capacity of 72TB.
Where Synology is able to recover this list of specifications with its cloud platform, which the DS423+ is capable of tapping into. If you’re coming to Synology NAS and are looking for a DS920+, which appears to be difficult to find, the DS423+ could be considered a worthy runner-up choice.
