Synology DiskStation DS923+ vs. DS423+: Which NAS is best?


Synology currently has two four-bay network-attached storage (NAS) with capable processors for the home and office. The Synology DiskStation DS923+ is the spiritual successor to the DS920+ but switched from an Intel CPU to AMD. The DiskStation DS423+ is more affordable but packs a punch with an Intel processor. So which Synology NAS enclosure is best?

The new DS923+ from Synology replaced the popular DS920+ with an all-new AMD Ryzen processor. It’s still a good pick for running a media server, but it’s not quite as capable as the QNAP TS-464.

The DiskStation DS423+ is Synology’s more affordable four-bay NAS with an Intel processor. It’s a good pick if you want a newer enclosure to the DS920+ with an Intel processor.

Comparing the Synology DiskStation DS923+ and DS423+ reveals similar specifications yet they’re very different enclosures. The former has an AMD processor, a new change for Synology whereas the DS423+ comes with a familiar CPU. If you’re in the market for a four-bay NAS with more powerful internals, go with the DS923+. To save the most money, the DS423+ would be the better pick.

Comparing the specifications

The Synology DiskStation DS923+ has an AMD Ryzen R1600 processor with two cores that can run up to 3.1 GHz. Intel’s Celeron J4125 is inside the DS423+ with four cores and a slightly slower clock speed of 2.7 GHz. The DS923+ comes with 4 GB of RAM with a maximum capacity of 32 GB whereas the DS423+ comes with 2 GB and can be pushed up to 6 GB.

Both enclosures have four drive bays allowing up to 80 TB of capacity with four 20 TB NAS drives. The two M.2 NMVe drive slots are great for installing two SSDs for caching. As the DS923+ can be boosted up to 32 GB, this feature is better suited to the DS423+ with its limited RAM capacity as caching would help provide additional headroom.

Two 92mm fans keep both NAS enclosures cool and I didn’t experience a single issue with thermal throttling on either NAS. Being a more powerful chip, the AMD-powered DS923+ can draw more power than the DS423+, but an additional 8W draw won’t have a massive impact on your utility bill. Weight and dimensions are pretty much the same too.

As aforementioned, the running theme through this comparison is the processor, which is the major difference between the two Synology NAS.

Identical design and features

Both the DS923+ and DS423+ are identical in design. They’re essentially the same enclosure with a different processor. The two enclosures have an all-black design with four front-facing drive bays. Two M.2 NVMe slots are at hand for improving performance when limited by memory, and the same cooling setup and ports are located on the rear.

It would be difficult to tell the difference when placing the DS923+ and DS423+ together without looking at the model number stickers.

Price and performance

Performance of the Synology DiskStation DS923+ and DS423+ are off the charts for prebuilt enclosures. The older DS920+ was a favorite for running Plex Media Server because of its powerful internals and the DS923+ and DS423+ are great replacements. Whether you want to store some files or run various resource-intensive apps, either NAS would be a good fit.

The same Synology DiskStation OS is available for both NAS and either enclosure can connect to and take advantage of the vast app catalog. Docker can also be installed for running custom picks, transforming the enclosures into powerful servers. The AMD Ryzen R1600 is a capable chip and although it has two fewer cores than the Intel DS423+, it can boost to higher speeds.

You won’t have an issue running any app on either NAS. DSM feels snappy with multiple accounts connected to the enclosures, but you can quickly saturate the two 1GbE links, which is a shame. A 2.5Gb network link would have been better here, but the DS923+ and DS423+ support link aggregation.

DS923+ vs. DS423+: Which NAS to buy?

The Synology DiskStation DS923+ supports up to 32 GB of RAM and has a capable AMD processor. It’s a switch from Intel which may not appease everyone, but the chip is still good for running heavier apps like Plex Media Server. You can expand just about everything inside the enclosure, creating a powerful server for the home or office.

Go with the DS923+ if you need more horsepower from your NAS. With the ability to install up to 32 GB of DDR4 system memory, this powerful server can handle more intensive workloads.

To save more money (the DS923+ is a pricey enclosure) I recommend Synology’s DiskStation DS423+. There’s the same number of drive bays, M.2 NVMe slots, and the ability to upgrade the system memory. It’s not quite as powerful as the DS923+ but the Intel CPU isn’t far behind the AMD chip and it’s a good choice for the home.
