Synology launches AMD-powered DS1522+ NAS

There’s a new AMD 5-bay NAS on the block.

Synology has announced its latest 5-bay NAS enclosure offering, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+. Designed with data retention and security in mind, this NAS is built for those in the IT administration world who need to deploy servers across medium to large-scale businesses. It’s also great for the home too.

Some highlight features of this new DiskStation DS1522+ from Synology include the AMD Ryzen R1600 processor with two cores and four threads, boosting up to a clock speed of 3.1GHz. This is joined by a proprietary PCI slot that can be used for an optional 10Gb network expansion card.

8GB of DDR4 RAM is included from the factory, but this can be expanded to 32GB if required, as often found in the best NAS. Synology markets two NVMe M.2 slots for SSD caching, though whether you’ll need to utilize them with the impressive RAM capacity depends on how heavy a load you plan on placing on the NAS.

As always, Synology loads the latest version of its DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which in this case is the excellent DSM 7.1. This operating system is fantastic for just about everyone, rocking impressive video surveillance, file sharing, data management, and other class-leading features.

If five bays aren’t enough, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ can be expanded using two DX517 enclosures, populated using the best NAS drives. Couple this capability with the optional 10Gb LAN expansion and M.2 slots and you’ve got one impressive NAS enclosure for storing data. Lots of data.

Backups are always important when tech is involved and Synology makes this easy with the DS1522+, which can automatically create backups of network devices, as well as snapshots. These can be sent to the cloud for additional redundancy and protection of important files.

If physical security is what you desire with a new NAS, this server can handle up to 40 IP cameras simultaneously with the powerful surveillance app from Synology to handle recording, activity alerts, and saved footage.

It’s all impressive on paper and we’ve got one in for review, so stay tuned to NAS Master for that to drop. If you’d like to go right ahead and purchase one, the Synology DS1522+ is available today for $699.99.
