Synology launches its new super-affordable two-bay DS223j NAS

Synology’s DiskStation DS220j was an incredibly popular and affordable NAS with an ARM processor, two drive bays, and 1GbE networking. Today, we’re looking at the recently launched DiskStation DS223j with an uprated ARM CPU, double the RAM and the same affordable price tag.

Meet the Synology DiskStation DS223j specs

Inside the new Synology DiskStation DS223j is a Realtek RTD1619B ARM processor with four physical cores that can hit speeds of up to 1.7GHz. There’s no integrated GPU and overall this processor doesn’t come close to what’s offered by Intel Celeron and AMD Ryzen with some of the best Synology NAS.

As well as the slight bump in processing power, Synology also doubled the amount of system memory inside the DS223j. The DS220j came with just 512MB and the DS223j ups this to 1GB, which is ideal for lighter NAS use and especially so with the DSM OS becoming more feature rich.

The same two NAS drive bays are present for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives without any M.2 or PCI slots for expansion. The company managed to cram all this inside the same white plastic shell used for the DS220j, which means you should have no problem upgrading between enclosures if the space is tight.

Priced at just $190, this is a steal for those seeking something to store and access data on across the network. It’s easy to spend thousands on a new NAS, especially the best NAS out there with more powerful processors and features, but the DS223j keeps things grounded with a decent specifications sheet.

The Synology DiskStation DS223j is available now at participating retailers. This isn’t the NAS for running Plex Media Server and transcoding 4K content all day long but if all you seek is an enclosure for running a few apps and providing access to data to more than one system at a time, this is a solid place to start.

The Synology DiskStation DS223j is the ideal NAS for home use and for those who don’t have the desire to run intensive apps using Synology’s DiskStation Manager OS.
